My Stupid Boss

Upi's 2016 Indonesian film is about a woman working in Kuala Lumpur. Diana moves to Malaysia for her husband's job and takes a secretarial post at a small ironworks owned by his old college friend. Bossman changes his decisions instantly, looks for no logic and blames his staff when he is wrong, and Diana spends every day clearing up the crises he creates. The film draws its humour from that relationship and does not try to correct him; in the end it is Diana who changes. It is adapted from a blog series that had a large readership in Indonesia. Reza Rahadian plays the part unrecognisably. It was a large box office success in Indonesian cinema and a sequel followed. Who it's for: viewers who like workplace comedy and Indonesian cinema. Who it's not for: anyone expecting measured humour; the film is built on shouting.
