Julia Loktev's 2025 documentary rests on months spent with independent journalists in Moscow in 2021. Loktev was born in the Soviet Union and returned with a camera. The filming was done just before the war began. The journalists are dealing with the everyday consequences of being declared foreign agents; the narrative gives this not through scenes of menace but through broadcast preparation and conversations in kitchens. The documentary is in five chapters and runs beyond five hours. What came afterwards is something the viewer knows, and the film is watched with that knowledge. Who it's for: viewers of press freedom and long-form documentary. Who it's not for: viewers looking for something short; the film is very long.
