What My Young Auntie Is About
Lau Kar-leung's 1981 Hong Kong film follows Tai-nun, a young martial arts expert who marries an elderly landowner to keep his estate from his brother and, on being widowed, becomes head of the family. Though younger than all of them she holds the position of their aunt, and that is the source of the film's comedy. Lau joins fighting to a question of hierarchy: who is owed respect, who may teach whom. Kara Hui's performance is extraordinary in both comedy and combat, and won her best actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The fights display traditional styles in detail. The costume ball sequence in the middle breaks with the tone. Who it's for: viewers who love classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema and fight comedy. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a serious story, or who will find long fight sequences wearing.
