Martial Club

The young Wong Fei-hung and his friend keep challenging each other over who is the better fighter. After a dressing down from their fathers, Wong starts training seriously while his friend goes on messing about. When the friend is beaten up by men from a rival school, Wong goes to demand satisfaction, and what he runs into turns out to be less a fight than a test. Lau Kar-leung builds the film on the etiquette of the martial world itself: who may challenge whom and when, and whether winning and being in the right are the same thing. The finale against a master brought down from the north plays out in an alley that keeps narrowing, and it is counted among the best fight scenes in the genre. Opening with lion dances, the film puts Gordon Liu and Kara Hui on screen together.
