In Lau Kar-leung's The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Gordon Liu Chia-hui played what Matthew Thrift, in the BFI's kung fu list, calls the eager student who forces his way into Shaolin to learn the secrets of the temple's sacred fighting technique. The BFI's year-by-year action list speaks of the same part as a student set on learning the temple's hidden techniques. That list gives him in The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter as Yang Wu-lang, one of a general's six sons, whose brothers are betrayed and slaughtered in the film's opening massacre. Of the final reckoning in Dirty Ho it is written that he and Wong Yue play with such complete simultaneity. Ten of his fourteen films in the catalogue carry Lau Kar-leung's signature.
