What Shaolin and Wu Tang Is About
In one city there are two rival schools, one teaching Shaolin kung fu and the other Wudang swordsmanship, and the two best students, Jun-kit and Fung-wu, are in fact close friends. A Manchu lord who watches the pair fighting in a brothel decides the two styles are dangerous and that he must learn both, and then he goes to work setting the friends against each other. Jun-kit enters the Shaolin Temple and becomes a monk; Fung-wu is held at a Taoist monastery and learns the finer points of the sword there. It was Gordon Liu’s first film as a director, and he also plays the young man representing Shaolin. The Wu-Tang Clan took their name from it and used samples of the English dub on their debut album in 1993.
