What Return to the 36th Chamber Is About
At a dye works the owner cuts wages and installs fighters over the workers, and nobody can stand against them. The workers decide to bring a monk from Shaolin, but the man they send is Chu, a con artist; he tries to do the job in a monk's robes and is exposed. So he actually goes to Shaolin. Lau Kar-leung made it not as the sequel to the first 36th Chamber but as a comic variation set in the same world. Gordon Liu leads again but plays an entirely different character. Its best passage is Chu being forced to build scaffolding at the monastery for years: he is not taught to fight, he is taught to lash bamboo, and the last fight is won with exactly that skill. Who it is for: viewers who like classic kung fu and the Shaw Brothers period. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the seriousness of the first film.
