Naked Lunch

David Cronenberg's 1991 film follows an exterminator addicted to insecticide. His typewriter begins to speak to him. Hallucination and reality no longer separate. Rather than adapting the novel the film tells the writing of it; the narrative turns addiction and guilt into creatures. It draws on William S. Burroughs's book and his life. Peter Weller leads. The effects were made with mechanical puppets. Who it's for: those who like experimental, strange cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a comprehensible story; the film withholds it on purpose and the images are disturbing.
