Namastey London

Jasmeet was born and raised in London; she calls herself Jazz and says she is English. Her father Manmohan came from India and does not accept how she lives. On the pretext of a holiday he takes her to Punjab and arranges a wedding there; she is married without her consent. The groom, Arjun, farms in the village. Jazz does not recognise the marriage and returns to London; Arjun follows and says he will stay a while. He does not force her. Vipul Amrutlal Shah directs. Akshay Kumar plays Arjun and Katrina Kaif plays Jazz; Rishi Kapoor is in the cast. The film did well at the Indian box office and is counted a turning point in Katrina Kaif's career. The matter it treats is the difference between immigrant generations, and the film takes that up directly. Its most talked about section is a long speech; at a gathering Arjun answers what has been said about India. Its stance is contested; although a forced marriage is the starting point, the film does not question that sufficiently. It also follows the shape of romantic comedy and the London scenes are shot as the genre expects. Its limit is point of view; the narrative builds a nationalist frame and the woman's decision stays in the background. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian romantic comedy and Akshay Kumar. Who it is not for: the basic premise is problematic, the narrative one sided, and the running time long.
