What NASCAR: The IMAX Experience Is About
Simon Wincer's forty-eight-minute 2004 documentary shot NASCAR racing for the IMAX format. The aim is not to build a story but to put the audience inside the car and at the edge of the track: engine noise, friction, a pit crew working in seconds, cars stacked on top of each other in a turn. Kiefer Sutherland narrates, and drivers of the period including Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr appear as themselves. It touches briefly on the history of the sport and on the danger it carries. A showpiece made for IMAX screens; on a small one it loses most of its effect.
