What Nat Turner: A Troublesome Property Is About
In 1831 Nat Turner led a slave rebellion in the United States. Local slave owners and their families were killed in it. Fifty five of the rebels were afterwards executed. On top of that, more than two hundred Black people with no part in it were lynched in reprisal. The documentary looks less at the event itself than at how it has been told. Turner’s story has been read in very different ways across history. The film sets those readings beside each other. It uses documentary footage and interviews together with dramatisations. The question it asks is how violence against oppression gets named. Charles Burnett’s American documentary, fifty eight minutes long, was completed in 2003.
