Never Cry Wolf

The government blames wolves for the decline of the caribou herds in the north and sends Tyler, a young biologist, alone into the Arctic to gather proof. Tyler watches one wolf family for months and finds the opposite of what he was sent for: in summer the wolves live largely on field mice. To prove it he tries living on nothing but mice himself. Carroll Ballard adapted Farley Mowat's book, and the shoot was spread over a long period in the Yukon and Alaska, in real winters. The weight of the story is carried by landscape and sound rather than dialogue. Despite being a Disney production it is neither a children's film nor a nature documentary but something between the two. Who it is for: viewers who like nature cinema and stories of solitude. Who it is not for: anyone wanting plot, since the film moves at the pace of observation.
