Wind

1983. The American crew loses the America's Cup to the Australians, a cup they had given up to nobody for a hundred and thirty-two years. Will Parker was at the helm and the defeat is put on him. Getting it back needs a new boat. Will sets about raising money for an experimental design by Joe Heisler, the new partner of his former girlfriend Kate. The boat is finished and the crew sails for Australia. The race turns out to be less about the wind than about who can work with whom. Carroll Ballard directs; two hours and six minutes, with Matthew Modine as Will, Jennifer Grey as Kate and Stellan Skarsgård in the cast. Australia II really did take the Cup in 1983, ending the New York Yacht Club's hundred-and-thirty-two-year run. The racing was shot at sea with real boats.
