What Nutcracker: The Motion Picture Is About

Christmas Eve, and the house is full of celebration. Clara’s godfather arrives with a bag of gifts, one of them a wooden nutcracker. That night, while everyone sleeps, she goes down to the tree and falls into a dream that is dark and enchanted at once. Carroll Ballard filmed the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s stage production, with sets and costumes by Maurice Sendak. Sendak and the choreographer Kent Stowell had gone back to Hoffmann’s original story and pulled the German and unsettling side of the tale back into it. What results is a Nutcracker that keeps its strangeness rather than sweetening it.
