What Nico Icon Is About
The documentary looks at the separate periods in the life of Christa Paffgen, the woman known as Nico: her youth in Germany, her modelling, the years with the Velvet Underground, her own music and the years of dependency. The film does not gather these periods into a single explanation; it sets side by side what the people around her say and leaves the contradictions between them. The account does not turn her into an icon or into a cautionary tale. The belittling epithets found in the record are not the film’s language. The testimony of her son and of those close to her stands at the centre. Susanne Ofteringer’s seventy minute German documentary was completed in 1995.
