Armando Soto La Marina 'El Chicote' What Night Falls Is About
Marcos is a gifted pelota player who keeps a small constellation of women in orbit: the cabaret singer Lucrecia, the wealthy Sara, and Rebeca, a young woman from a respectable family. His habit of using people and discarding them eventually comes back for him. Rebeca's brother, buried in gambling debts, pushes Marcos into throwing important matches, and when the scheme collapses the mob takes an interest. Roberto Gavaldón's 1952 picture finds in a fast, punishing Mexican sport what American noir found in the boxing ring. Pedro Armendáriz plays flatly against his heroic type, and Jack Draper's black and white makes the night heavy.
