What The Barracks Is About
At the end of the nineteenth century, in the countryside outside Valencia, a peasant family settles on a plot the village has boycotted for years and sets about farming it, facing the resistance and hatred of the whole village. The film follows the double fight this family wages, with the land and with its neighbours. Roberto Gavaldón’s hundred and ten minute production was adapted from Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s novel of the same name and was shot not in Spain but in Mexico, with a large part of the cast drawn from Spanish exiles who had taken refuge there. Domingo Soler, Anita Blanch and Manolo Fábregas star. The film took ten of the eighteen Ariel awards handed out at the first ceremony in 1946, among them best film and best director.
