What The Golden Cockerel Is About
A poor street crier, having lost his mother, comes away from a fair with a dying fighting cock, nurses it back to health, and finds his life turning along with the bird. Roberto Gavaldon's 1964 film comes from a text by Juan Rulfo, adapted by Gavaldon together with Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Rulfo began writing it in 1956 and is believed to have finished by the end of 1958, though it was not published as a book until 1980. Gabriel Figueroa shot it. It opened on 18 December 1964. What it is about is what luck does to a person, and how winning is no more permanent than losing.
