Night King

Jack Ng's film is set in a nightclub that has stood for decades in East Tsim Sha Tsui. The club changes hands, and the man who has managed it for years learns that the new boss is his former wife. The background is an industry in decline. The great days of the nightclubs are over; the narrative gives this not as nostalgia but as the daily problem of staff about to lose their work. Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng lead and their scenes together carry the film. The tone sits between comedy and drama, taking the present state of Hong Kong cinema as its subject through a place of its own. Who it's for: those who like Hong Kong comedy drama and city stories. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical treatment of the nightclub world; the film tells the trade largely from an affectionate place.
