What Nina Conti: Her Master's Voice Is About
After the death of Ken Campbell, her mentor and once her lover, Nina Conti takes the puppets he left behind to Vent Haven in Kentucky, the place where the puppets of dead ventriloquists are laid to rest. She gets to know her latex and wooden travelling companions along the way, and through their mouths starts taking apart both herself and the man she lost. What comes out sits between documentary and mockumentary, a requiem that keeps the joke and the grief inside the same sentence. Campbell was one of the great mavericks of British theatre, a man who dug up forgotten artforms, and ventriloquism was the one he handed on to Conti. The film earned a BAFTA nomination and a Grierson Award.
