What No One Knows About Persian Cats Is About
No One Knows About Persian Cats, directed by Bahman Ghobadi, is an Iranian film shot in secret over just 17 days without permission from the government; the screenplay was co-written with Roxana Saberi, an Iranian American journalist who was imprisoned at the time. The film follows two young musicians, newly released from prison, who dive into Tehran's underground rock scene, rehearsing in basements and construction sites since performing in public is banned, while trying to flee the country for a concert in Europe. The film opened the Un Certain Regard section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and shared the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize. The film was banned in Iran, and Ghobadi himself was forced into exile after making it. The film holds a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and 71 on Metacritic. Who it's for: anyone curious about a film shot in secret without government permission, following Tehran's illegal underground music scene, later banned in Iran itself. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clean, fictionalized portrait of a music world, since the film shows real musicians living under real risk.
