What No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos Is About
The documentary is about a friendship between two cinematographers that lasted their whole lives. Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond filmed the crushing of the 1956 Hungarian uprising with equipment from their film school. After that they had to leave the country. In America they could not get a footing for a long time; as refugees they stayed at the outer edge of the work. In time they got inside Hollywood and made a decisive contribution to the new wave of American cinema. The film tells those two lines together, the political story and the professional rise. The account moves through archive material and through what the people who worked with them say. Peter Bogdanovich and John Boorman are among those who speak. James Chressanthis’s eighty six minute American documentary was completed in 2009.
