What No, the Case Is Happily Resolved Is About
The man who happens to witness a brutal murder decides not to testify. That hesitation is exactly what the killer needs: he goes to the police, presents himself as the witness and names the real witness as the murderer. In a moment the innocent man is the accused and the guilty one is the reliable citizen. Vittorio Salerno’s film belongs to the Italian crime cycle of the seventies, but its interest is not in the chase; it is in how easily justice can be turned around and what silence costs. It follows an uncomfortable logic to the end.
