In 1947, in a Lithuanian village where Soviet rule has only just been established, the chairman of the village council is killed; he is the fifth man in that post to be killed that year. His sons decide to settle the account, and the village splits in two: on one side the new administration, on the other the fighters who have gone into the forest. Most of the time it is not clear who is on which side, and everybody is watching everybody else. The film was made in Soviet Lithuania and stands openly on the side of the administration; even so it does not leave the men in the forest flat. Donatas Banionis and Regimantas Adomaitis appear in Vytautas Zalakevicius’s hundred and seven minute film, completed in 1966.
