Werner Herzog's 2019 documentary follows the trail of his friend, the travel writer Bruce Chatwin. Before he died Chatwin gave Herzog his rucksack; the film is built on the idea of setting out with it thirty years later, reaching from Patagonia to Australia. Herzog is not making a biography here; he joins Chatwin's preoccupations to his own: the meaning of walking, the origin of storytelling, the unimportance of the border between fact and fiction. The exaggerations in Chatwin's books are discussed, and Herzog does not count them as a fault. The account has the shape of a wander and is scattered; Herzog's voice carries it. Who it's for: viewers who like Herzog's documentaries and travel writing. Who it's not for: anyone wanting an orderly biography of a writer, or who will find the director's personal narration excessive.
