What North Korea: A Day in the Life Is About
The documentary follows a day in the life of a family in North Korea. The film was made with the permission and cooperation of the North Korean authorities and proceeds largely inside a frame set by the film bureau there; the scenes shown, their order and the words spoken all belong to that frame. There is no outside voice in the account and no commentary. Because of that choice the film can be read two ways: as the promotion it was prepared to be, or as a document showing the official account itself. What a viewer sees depends on whether they know that frame. Pieter Fleury’s forty eight minute Dutch documentary was completed in 2004.
