Not Just a Goof

Eric Kimelton's 2024 documentary covers the making of A Goofy Movie, released in 1995. It was produced not at Disney's main studio but in the television animation unit; the team was young and inexperienced and the company showed the project little interest. The question at the centre is how a film that did not find its audience at the box office became a cult work. Members of the team describe the disappointment at the time and the attention that arrived years later, with an online fan base at the heart of that change. What the film says about fathers and sons is also the documentary's real subject. The relationships members of the crew had with their own fathers enter the account, which lifts it out of being a technical production story. Who it's for: those interested in Disney animation history and cult film culture. Who it's not for: viewers who have not seen the film; the documentary refers to scenes constantly and assumes the context.
