What NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage Is About
The documentary follows a theatre company staging Shakespeare’s Richard III across three continents in more than two hundred performances. The camera goes backstage and records what happens on the tour, the rehearsals and the conversations the actors have among themselves. Passages from the play come in between, and it becomes clear that the play finds a different echo in each city. The itinerary, running from Epidaurus to Doha, gives the film its spine as well. The account does not show the play through from start to finish; what it is really curious about is the same text being built again every night. Kevin Spacey and Sam Mendes appear in Jeremy Whelehan’s ninety three minute documentary, completed in 2014.
