What Old Czech Legends Is About
The film tells old Czech legends in puppet animation. It is made of seven parts: Cech the Forefather, Bivoj, Libuše, Přemysl, the Girls’ War, Horymír and the Lucka War. Each part takes up a separate legend. The puppets were moved by hand and shot frame by frame. It is a work of stop motion rather than of drawing. The account is not built like a children’s tale; its language is heavy and ceremonial. The stories are adapted from a book and belong to the oldest layer of Czech history. Zdeněk Štěpánek and Karel Höger are among the voices. Jiří Trnka’s ninety one minute Czechoslovak film was completed in 1953.
