Joan Morgan What On the Record Is About
The documentary follows the music executive Drew Dixon as she wrestles with whether to speak publicly. Dixon becomes one of the first Black women to accuse Russell Simmons, one of the most powerful figures in hip hop, of sexual misconduct. Simmons has denied all of the allegations made against him. Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering take in not only Dixon’s account but those of Sil Lai Abrams and Sheri Sher, and bring the question to this: why is a Black woman heard less when she speaks, and why does speaking cost her more. Oprah Winfrey was among the producers and had secured the Apple TV Plus deal; days before the Sundance screening she withdrew, saying the film needed more work and more context, and the distribution deal left with her. The directors said the decision blindsided them. It premiered at Sundance on 25 January 2020 and HBO Max released it on 27 May 2020.
