What On the Road to Berlin Is About
Summer 1942. Ogarkov, a young lieutenant, is condemned to be shot for cowardice and negligence. Private Dzhurabaev is assigned to guard him until the sentence is carried out. Then the front line moves, the two of them are left inside the German encirclement, and they set off across the steppe together: one a condemned man, the other his escort. Sergei Popov's 2015 film comes from Emmanuil Kazakevich's novella Two in the Steppe and from Konstantin Simonov's war diaries. Its subject is the tension between an order and trust: sharing a fire with the man you have been detailed to shoot. It uses the classic Soviet two-men-walking structure, but what it describes is survival rather than heroism. An early role for Yura Borisov.
