What On the Trail of My Father Is About
A small village at the foot of the Dolomites in the fifties. A bear has been seen in the area and is killing livestock. On the night the village puts up a reward, Pietro, a man fallen in everyone's eyes and given to drink, says he will kill it. He takes his young son with him. The two of them go up the mountain. Marco Segato's Italian film is adapted from Matteo Righetto's novel. The hunt is a pretext; the real subject is a father and a son coming to know each other for the first time, and the boy seeing what his father is actually like. Marco Paolini plays the father. The mountain landscape is inside the telling; the weather, the snow and the altitude decide how things go.
