Alicia Vega What One Hundred Children Waiting for a Train Is About
Ignacio Agüero's 1990 Chilean documentary follows a cinema workshop run in a poor district of Santiago. Every Saturday Alicia Vega turns a church hall into a screening room and works with the children. Most of those taking part had never seen a film. Vega explains how movement is made with simple devices; the children build their own, and at the end they are taken to a cinema. The documentary was shot in the last years of military government. Poverty and repression are not discussed directly, but what the children say carries them; the narrative leaves that connection unmade. Who it's for: those who like Chilean cinema and documentary about education. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a dense account; the film settles for observation.
