What Or (My Treasure) Is About
Or is eighteen. She goes to school, works evenings in a restaurant, collects bottles off the street for cash, and does all of it so that her mother Ruthie will not go back to the street herself. Ruthie has just come out of hospital; Or has found her work cleaning houses, but the work is hard and pays badly. The mother calls her daughter her treasure, and the daughter carries the mother. Keren Yedaya's first feature took the Camera d'Or at Cannes in 2004. The form is part of the argument: the camera never moves once, and the characters are never left outside the frame or cut by its edge. There is nowhere for the viewer to look away to.
