A man in the final days of treatment at a rehabilitation centre goes into Oslo for a day for a job interview. He sees old friends. The film does not present addiction as a struggle; its subject is how frightening the possibility of returning to his life is to him. The long scene in which he listens to the conversations at the surrounding tables in a cafe holds the ordinary life he has missed in a single shot. Joachim Trier directed, with Anders Danielsen Lie in the lead. It is adapted loosely from a French novel and takes place in one day. A real warning: the film is directly about suicide and its ending offers no consolation. If addiction or suicide is difficult for you, know that going in.
