What Our Shining Days Is About
Chen Jing plays the yangqin, a traditional Chinese instrument, at a music school. There are two worlds inside that school: the Western orchestra department with its pianos and violins carries the prestige, while traditional music sits in a corner nobody is interested in. Chen Jing gathers her friends, forms a Chinese orchestra and sets out to reach the national competition. Money, rehearsal space and respect are all in short supply. Wang Ran's film found an unexpected audience among young people in China. The scene in which the traditional instruments and the Western ones face off was widely talked about. It argues for holding on to your own culture in the language of a teen comedy.
