What Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton: This Is Stones Throw Records Is About
Stones Throw Records was founded in Los Angeles in 1996 by the DJ Peanut Butter Wolf and has gone on putting out records that stand off centre and resist easy description. Jeff Broadway’s documentary tells the label’s history and the circle that formed around it, weaving live footage, previously unseen archive material, home video from the inner circle and interviews with the people who carried the label. Common, Mike D, MF DOOM, Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator all speak. At its centre are the cost of staying independent and what it means to defend the odd thing in music. The mark left by J Dilla, one of the names most associated with the label, is a substantial part of the account.
