What Out 1: Spectre Is About
At first the film looks like nothing more than scenes of Parisian life. As time passes it becomes clear that there is a scheme of some kind, perhaps a game, perhaps a threat, but one that draws in the thirteen characters and then, possibly, everyone. The idea that real life might itself be an enormous yarn someone somewhere is spinning stays open to the end. This version of more than four hours is the shortened form of a far longer work Rivette drew from the same material. Jean-Pierre Leaud and Bulle Ogier appear in the two hundred and fifty three minute French production, completed in 1973.
