What Out in the Silence Is About
There are no secrets in a small town, but silence is expected. When Joe Wilson, who left Oil City years before, puts the announcement of his marriage to a man in the local paper, the place erupts. Kathy Springer, who sees the notice, writes to him about her gay son CJ, who is being savagely bullied at school, and Wilson goes back. The documentary by Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer listens to the townspeople one at a time: the mother, the boy, the local head of the American Family Association, an evangelical pastor and his wife. It was afterwards used as a discussion tool in more than five hundred screenings in halls, schools and churches.
