Overseas

In the Philippines a training centre prepares women to be sent abroad. The work waiting for them is house cleaning and looking after children. A series of role playing exercises is run at the centre. The women take turns playing the employer and the worker. In this way they work through how to answer the abuse and ill treatment they may meet. There is also preparation for dealing with homesickness. The documentary looks at this interval before departure, when nobody has left yet. The account frames the women neither as victims nor as heroes. Sung-a Yoon’s Belgian, French and Philippine coproduction, ninety minutes long, was completed in 2019.
