What Paco and the Magical Book Is About
Paco is in hospital and her memory resets every day; the only thing she can hold on to is the picture book she carries. Onuki, a rich and difficult patient, sets about persuading everyone in the building to stage the story in that book. Tetsuya Nakashima's 2008 film comes from a play and uses his familiar manner to the limit: saturated colour, fast cutting, the real and the fabulous folding into each other constantly. Onuki, played by Koji Yakusho, is where the actual change in the film happens. It is excessive to look at and unguarded in feeling, which makes it hard going for anyone who wants only one of those.
