What Pain Is About

A man lost his sense of pain after an accident in childhood. Cut him, burn him, beat him and he feels nothing, which is why he works collecting debts. He meets a woman selling jewellery on the street; she has severe haemophilia, and the smallest scratch is dangerous for her. One of them cannot feel pain and the other cannot get away from it. Kwak Kyung-taek directed the film from a webtoon. The setup is almost too neat: the two conditions are designed to complete each other, and the melodrama uses that symmetry to the end. Kwon Sang-woo and Jung Ryeo-won are in the leads. Anyone not used to the open, direct language of Korean melodrama may find it heavy; but the idea that not feeling pain is also a loss holds the film up.
