What Palms Is About
Artur Aristakisyan spent five years filming people living on the streets of Chisinau: beggars, the homeless, lives lived entirely outside society. What came out is not an interview documentary; the voice running through it is a father speaking to his unborn son. He does not ask you to pity these people, he ascribes a kind of holiness to them, and that choice is what makes the film genuinely uncomfortable. It won the Staudte Prize in Berlin in 1994 and the Nika in Russia. At over two hours it is not easy to watch, and not easy to forget either.
