Pannaiyarum Padminiyum

S. U. Arunkumar's 2014 Tamil film follows a village landlord who becomes attached to an old Premier Padmini car he acquires from a friend. He loves it more than anything; his wife refuses to ride in it until he learns to drive. The film is built almost entirely on that simple situation. Maintaining the car, the village's interest in it, the relationship with the driver and the landlord's pride are all its material. There is no large event and it needs none. Jayaprakash and Tulasi play the couple and Vijay Sethupathi the driver. The role was one of the turning points in Sethupathi's career. The cinematography shows the village warmly without prettifying it. Who it's for: those who like quiet Tamil village drama and stories about attachment to an object. Who it's not for: viewers looking for plot; there is one dramatic development across the whole film.
