Sethupathi

S. U. Arunkumar's 2016 Tamil film follows Sethupathi, a police officer who endangers both his job and his family after arresting a man with influence. It is not built as an action film; the balance between the man's life at home and his life at the station is its real subject. Vijay Sethupathi's performance builds a policeman outside the heroic template: someone who tires, who is afraid, who lies to his family. The film's best passages are in the waiting before violence. Nivas K. Prasanna's music carries the tension. Its weakness is giving in to genre expectation in the final section and reducing the resolution to a personal reckoning. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil police films and character-driven action. Who it's not for: anyone wanting constant action, or avoiding scenes of violence.
