What Paper Clips Is About
Whitwell is a town of fewer than two thousand people in the Tennessee mountains, almost entirely white and Christian. In 1998 the middle school’s principal wanted her students to see something of difference in the world and the scale of the Holocaust, and the children started a project: collect six million paper clips, one for each Jewish person murdered. The choice of object was itself something they learned, that Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels under occupation as a silent refusal. The project outgrew the town and reached the world, and in 2001 it became a memorial in the schoolyard, built inside a real German railcar that had carried Jews to the camps.
