Guna Zariņa N Nauris Puntulis What Paradise 89 Is About
The summer of 1989. Two city girls, Paula and Laura, spend the holidays in a small town with their cousins Maija and Linda. The four of them are barely watched over by any adult; they enjoy the freedom, imitate grown ups and get into things that land them in trouble. The story of nine year old Paula growing up falls in the period when Latvia was taking its first steps towards independence. The film is based on real events and leaves the history in the background behind the children. The order the four girls build among themselves and the absence of the grown ups produce all of the film’s humour and all of its tension. Madara Dislere’s ninety minute Latvian film was completed in 2018.
