What Paris Belongs to Us Is About
Paris Belongs to Us is the film Jacques Rivette financed by borrowing 80,000 francs from Cahiers du Cinéma's own coffers after no producer would back him, shooting on credit for camera and lab work while crew and cast worked on a profit sharing basis. Filming began in 1957 and dragged on piecemeal due to money troubles, and the film wasn't released until December 13, 1961, meaning it began shooting before both François Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless but reached theaters after both. Claude Chabrol backed it as a co-producer and appears in a small role. Who it's for: anyone curious about the French New Wave film that actually started shooting first but reached theaters last, and the conditions that made that happen. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a fast, easily produced film, since this was the product of a nearly four year struggle.
