Passengers

Morten Tyldum's 2016 film takes place on a ship travelling to another planet. The voyage will last a hundred and twenty years and the passengers wait in hibernation pods. A malfunction wakes Jim early. As the loneliness stretches on he opens Aurora's pod and tells her it was an accident. The film sets that decision inside a romance; the narrative takes up its weight in the second half without fully reckoning with it. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt lead. The ship design and visual effects come forward. Who it's for: those who like science fiction romance and enclosed narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the lead to be held to account; the film does not do enough of that.
