What Most People Live in China Is About
Norway in the twenty-four hours before an election, all of it circling one petrol station. Each of the eight episodes takes its cue from one of the country’s political parties; six writers wrote them and nine directors shot them. A cow swallows a mobile phone, a blind girl sells dubious lottery tickets, a couple lose a child, a man in pyjamas comes to the aid of three girls, and nine old men find a young woman stuck in a swamp. Holding it together is Lasse, who owns the station and wants only to fly. The result is less a political film than the sum of the jokes a country tells about itself.
